Please be familiar with the basics of Adobe Illustrator (or Adobe InDesign, if you prefer that to Illustrator) and Photoshop. We will be working on the computer during class. You can work on your own laptop or one of the computers on the 4th floor. Please bring a flash drive to every class.

Class 1 - September 12

Please work on the following things during the week and have it ready on Sept. 17

  • Go to the link "Advertising Assignments" (under "Homework") and pick your first project.

  • Research the subject and jot down ideas. Rough sketches is all you need at this point.

  • Determine if your ad is beautiful/inspirational, emotional, educational, or a combination.

  • Go to one of the free images sites (pixabay.com, pexels.com, unsplash.com, vectorstock.com) or a stock photo site such as bigstockphoto.com and look for photos or illustrations that might work for your ad. Even if your ad ends up featuring just a headline or you decide to create your own graphics, looking at pictures might spark some good ideas.

  • During class 2, I will work with each one of you individually, going over your ideas.

  • If you have any questions send me an email: rubiendesign@earthlink.net

  • You can also call me at 310-373-7694 (this is a landline, so if I don't pick up please leave a message and a call back number.)

  • Or you can DM me on Instagram @angela_rubien

If you want to re-visit the slide shows that we looked at in Class 1 ("Type of Ads" and "Generating ideas") go to the link "Learning", then "Ads" and scroll down a little past the branding slide shows.

Class 2 - September 19

  • All of you had great concepts today. Keep working on what we discussed.

  • A quick tip: some of you need images that have a white background. When you look on stock photography sites add the word "isolated". For example, "lemon isolated" gives you all images of lemons with no background.

  • For this class, you do not need to buy any stock photos. You can use the stock photos with the watermark on it. If you decide at the end that it's a piece you'd like in your portfolio then, of course, you should buy the image. If you're not sure what size and how to get it the cheapest way please ask me. I recommend Bigstockphoto.com

Class 3 - September 26

  • I'm really proud of all of you. Your ads are great! Solid concepts and great visuals. Keep going!

  • All of you have their first project pretty much finished, except for maybe some minor details

  • If you're working on a campaign, have all ads in your campaign ready by next Saturday

  • Start thinking of the next project you want to do, and if you have time make some simple sketches

  • Email me if you have any questions.

Class 4 - October 3

  • Please have your first ad finished, work on your second ad.

Class 5 - October 10

  • Short re-cap on where you're at: some of you have already fulfilled the requirements of 3 ads and some of you are done with two ads and only need one more. This is only week 5, so there is plenty of time. Just a reminder, please be sure not to miss more than two classes, otherwise I won't be able to let you pass this course.

  • At this point I want you to take a little breather and just think about ideas for additional ads.

  • Suggested reading 50 Genious print ads with brilliant design techniques

Class 7 - October 28

  • Finish working on your second ad, and move on to your third ad

  • If you have missed two or three classes please remember that you can still get and A or B by submitting an additional ad by week 9. Please refer to the syllabus I handed out at the first class.
